Flapjack Friday: On Finishing My Dissertation During A Pandemic: A Carrel, Coffee & the Glorious Sense of Completion

The Covid-19 quarantine provided me the mental space I needed to finish my dissertation, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) provided me some physical space called a carrel. This “tiny-space,” located on the ultra-quiet floor of the library, included a small desk, a noisy fluorescent light, a door with a latch, an uncomfortable chair, and part of a window with part of a view of the quad. This little, nondescript spot enabled me to focus without distractions. I loved everything about being there—the welcomed silence, the close proximity to books, and the coffee.

Yes, it is true! The library of all places provided B&W brew-fantastic and locally roasted. I could always count on a fresh cup of B&W Classic, Natural, or Original brew and looked forward to mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee breaks.

So, this Christmas, after clearing out my carrel and graduating (Yay!), we celebrated the season with a bag of B&W Merry+Bright. Every afternoon between Christmas and the New Year, I would prepare a Merry+Bright pour-over in my favorite Russian teacup. First, I’d take in the aroma of rich chocolate mingled with raspberries and just a hint of cinnamon, then, I’d take a first, second, and third sip savoring the crazy aroma and yummy flavor … and I’d breathe a sigh of relief, grateful for a Carrel, Coffee and the glorious sense of Completion.
